Sad story...

This is a dead mother deer behind my house in the woods... I saw her yesterday and she must of just died and a coyote or something had just eaten her heart out... today when I went back about half of her was eaten away.

I had seen two fawns in the neighborhood who looked too young to be on their own... a friend who lives several houses away told me that she had seen a mother deer with a broken leg and the two fawns together...

So the fawns had been hanging around with their mother in those back woods and now she is gone... I hope the best for the fawns...

The story gets sadder cause I realized that last night when I couldn't sleep that the mother deer probably broke her leg on my fence... two other deer have that I know of... now I want to take that fence down...

That is a sad story Kitty. Peace to you. If you put the fence up to keep the deer out then you might try a different type fence.

Thanks Edgar.... saddest thing to happen to me in a while... the fence was to keep the dogs in...

It's this one with the top row (4 pics on top row right... the deer get their leg in the square part and it breaks... terribly sad... one deer was stuck and we had to lift him off the fence... he was already dead... I don't need the back part of the yard fenced... the dogs can do with less space...

I just don't understand that Kitty. The deer should be able to negotiate that fence with ease. I've seen deer run through/over barbed wire fences that were about that high like they weren't even there. Are you saying they get their foot stuck in the top of the fencepost? If so can you plug up the top of the fencepost with something?

Oh Edgar...

I think cause it's black they don't gauge so well going over and their leg goes through the top part... they probably break it trying to wrench free...

Got some reflective tape at the hardware store to put on the fence... might help a little...

A 12" heavy tarp material folded over the top of the fence and stitched in place where they cross the most might help them.

Thank you Edgar for the idea... it's a very good one... I put on the tape on today...

One of dogs had left one of the deers forelegs outside my back door and then when I went in the woods to see the carcass two big turkey vultures were flying in the trees above me... the guts of the deer had been opened and I could see all the seeds that it had eaten... so the cycle goes...
